ELECTRICIAN - HOBBY

City of Houston – Houston Airport System (HAS) Maintenance, General Maintenance Services Business Unit – Hobby Airport. Position is available for all interested persons. Workdays and hours vary to include shift work, rotation, weekends, and holidays. The role is on a full‑time basis. Purpose of the Position The Electrician troubleshoots, maintains, manages, and upgrades existing electromechanical systems to ensure an economical and safe distribution of electricity. The role performs journeyman‑level electrical work by maintaining electrical distribution equipment, lighting systems, and various devices in terminal and support buildings, and responds to emergency calls for electrical failures or shutdowns. Responsibilities include managing airside and landside lighting across all Houston Airport System facilities (IAH, HOU, EFD). Responsibilities Interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics, and design specifications. Apply National Electrical Codes and use electrical tools, meters, and materials in a commercial setting. Work with high‑voltage (15 KV) systems, primary distribution, emergency generators, control systems, UPS, and PLC. Troubleshoot, maintain, manage, and upgrade electromechanical, electrical, and electronic installations. Research and analyze causes of failures; repair, replace, and install new equipment/components. Provide preventive maintenance to ensure safe and clean operating conditions. Prepare and update records, logs, and reports related to work performed. Respond to emergency calls for electrical failures and shutdowns. Organize, schedule, and monitor work assignments. Research technical product specifications. Compare and evaluate product prices from vendors to determine most competitive bids. Assist in inventory control management of electrical parts and components. Work Environment The position requires considerable physical exertion, including frequent climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 lb), and working in awkward positions. Employees may be exposed to extreme temperatures, chemical gases, noise, and other hazards. High precision eye‑hand coordination is required. Minimum Requirements Education : High school diploma or GED certificate; successful completion of an approved apprentice electrician program or equivalent as recognized by the Electrical Safety and Licensing Advisory Board. Experience : No journeyman‑level experience required. Certification/License : Valid State of Texas Journeyman Electrician License. Must hold a Texas driver’s license; a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required. Preferences Journeyman Electrician License held for 5+ years. Knowledge of airfield lighting materials and applications. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Preference given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the necessary qualifications. Selection/Skills Tests Selection will involve application review and/or interview. The department may administer skill assessment tests. Safety Impact Position Yes – the position is subject to random drug testing. If the position is promotional, candidates must pass an assignment drug test. Pay Grade Grade 18. Salary Information Salary will be based on the applicant’s qualifications and the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
